With the commencement of the Australian Curriculum, Technology has rapidly become an integrated feature of the primary school curriculum. Lessons are not only delivered with the aid of interactive whiteboards, PC鈥檚 and iPads, content is now presented digitally across a range of mediums.
As a curriculum area, we are developing the student鈥檚 technical understanding and ability to competently use the computer. Their basic skills in Microsoft programs such as Paint, Word, PowerPoint, Excel
and Publisher are being both challenged and augmented. Students from Years 3 to 6 are developing their touch typing skills through the use of the program, 鈥淭yping Tournament鈥. Students from Years 3 to 6 are being educated in Cyber Safety and digital citizenship which is becoming more important in this day and age.
The students at CCC are offered innovative and creative learning opportunities. Video productions with iMovie in conjunction with the composition of soundtracks in GarageBand are being taught in Year 6. Lessons in coding and basic programming are being taught to Years 3 – 6 using a variety of block coding programs. In Year 5 the students have been involved in programming robots using Lego. The students program their robots to travel from two locations performing various 180掳 and 360掳 turns in the process.
Students are involved in design and construction activities in the classroom that range from building animal traps to solar powered ovens. During these activities the design, construction and evaluation of the task are assessed as key components of the Technology curriculum. Children enjoy this aspect of Technology, often producing exemplary constructions.
The combination of these experiences throughout the schooling year assists in developing the Technology curriculum into one that is both rigorous and relevant in today鈥檚 technologically integrated world.
